That's okay, I didn't really want to teach anyway.

http://www.detnews.com/2005/schools/0505/22/A01-189220.htm

Looks like SOMEONE may have to move out of state for a couple of years. Then again, I've been hearing that former graduates of my program have a slight advantage over "traditional" graduates, since we already have a few years of life and work experience under our belts. We can bring things to the table (in my case, my brief career in PR/advertising/marketing) that those who are right of college can't. Plus, I've already gained a couple of extra years working full-time with kids (parapro, nanny, etc), as opposed to the typical college "senior."

I just hope that, by the this time next year, the teaching job market in Michigan is looking a little better....

I hope whatever teaching position you want will be available to you when the time comes.
In the mean time, if you'll be fleeing, CA is a nice state to live in. My bro is a teacher in S. Calif. and he loves it. Good luck to you!

Hey Fred (since I hope you'll read this at some point), I have a question for you. My dad wants to know if he could teach in Florida right now, given its current need for teachers. His Bachelors was Biology he has a Masters in Management Science (but, of course, no teaching related education at this point). He wants to move to FL to be closer to HIS parents. Hell, with his Masters, couldnt he even teach at the college level (community college is nothing else)? Tell me again, how much longer would he have to take education classes and become certified?

Jen - there are tons of openings here in Florida. The pay sucks, but that's not why we're here, right?

Community colleges usually require an MA/MS plus at least 18 hours in the subject area.

For high school, your dad would have to move to a county that has an alternative certification program (ACP). In the Tampa Bay area, both Pinellas (St. Pete) and Hillsborough (Tampa) have such a program. Here's the link for Tampa: http://apps.sdhc.k12.fl.us/public/dept/staffdev/acp/index.htm

Before you can be hired in Tampa, you must have a BA/BS plus a number of hours in the field. I would suspect your father qualifies because of the Masters.

He then has to get lucky enough to get hired. Once that happens - he can enter the ACP program and has three years to complete all the requirements. That's how I got in. Cost to the participant is $500.

Here's the link to the actual positions open: http://apps.sdhc.k12.fl.us/hrdiv/Instructional_Positions/index.asp

Hope that helps!

Jen - I'm not too sure the ACP link was right. Try this:

Oh my god, there's thousands of positions on that site!!!

And I know that the out of state schools are hiring right on the spot at these job fairs.

But there's no way I can move out of state by myself. I'd have to wrangle MIssy and Nikki to go with me or something.

Jen,
Move to Arizona or New Mexico and I'm so with ya! I've been looking into houses in those 2 states lately. Not likely that I'll ever move there though.

Jen said...

Nik, would you really move to AZ? That was actually another state I've considered.

And if you'd move to THOSE hot ass places, why not FL?

Nik said...

Jen, I'd only live in NM or AZ, nowhere else. Why, you ask? Here's why:
FL-- hurricanes
Cali-- earthquakes
Anywhere in the northeast--snow/cold

NM or AZ, what do you have to deal with there? Sandstorms and a lotta heat? Doesn't sound too bad to me. I know they have snow in some places there, but not where I would live!

After further review, I have found the perfect city in Arizona for me and you, Jen. Bullhead City, AZ!! It's perfect and incredibly pretty. It's in the NW corner right near both the Cali and NV (Vegas baby) border. Now I just have to find a house that's affordable but not crappy looking. lol

Dude, I would really do it, so dont toy with my emotions like that if you arent serious.

HOLY CRAP this is weird. After reading this thread, I looked up some neck coolers/cooling scarves on eBay (an AMAZING price, FYI, for those of you with soldiers...it's item #7159314224).

It took me a while to notice this seller's location...BULLHEAD CITY, AZ.

RIGHT AFTER READING NIKKI'S COMMENT ABOUT IT.

Weird.

Half the population in BC is 45 or older.

Could we find somewhere that I at least have a chance in HELL of meeting someone?

Jen said...

Well hell, you're married to one, aren't you?

Nik said...

Jen--
BC is right near the Cali/Nevada, so there'll be tons of pretty maids lined up within a short drive from there!

Ooops, I forgot the word border in my post! And Jen, I'm semi-serious about moving out there eventually. After looking at what they have in my price range, not so sure about it anymore. Even a lot of the $150,000 houses are crappy looking. Not only that, but not too sure about the job market. So, who knows, I may do it, I may not.

Also, Renee, I'm with ya on the 45 year old thing. There are a few older musicians that I would so do!
