The Godfatha
Even more importantly- The Godmotha.
That’s right folks, this weekend I’ll be christened The Godmotha (insert music and/or quotes from the Godfather movies here). I’ll be able to make you offers you can’t refuse.
But seriously people, what do you think the role of the godparents should be?
Is it a religious role, just a church requirement, replacement parents if the real ones pass away, someone to give the kid extra presents on a birthday? What do you think?

Yeah, what LoB said.
Have a safe trip!!
(I laughed at your first few lines, though.)
I am the godmother for my neice and for the most part, I am just an additional gift giver. ;) They are Catholic, so the godfather/godmother thing is suppose to be to watch over them and always be there for them. I don't think, in our case, it would be to take care of the kids if the parents were to die, because all of their kids have different godparents. And I don't imagine they would seperate the kids. But I think its different for every family.
having been raised in a religion that takes the "godparents" thing seriously, the mentor thing is partially right, but was supposed to be an extra spiritual mentor to the child... AND step in if something ever happened to the parent/s.
It was the intent that the godfather would take over the role of the father if anything happened to him -- he became the stand-in for the father and helped raise the child emotionally, spiritually, physically... took the father's place.... likewise for the godmother if something happened to the child's mother.
Given that in centuries past it was common that one or both of the parents didn't survive war, famine, disease to the child's adulthood, the role of godparent was an important and serious obligation. Today it is mostly honorary -- but it is the parents' way of saying that they would trust you with their child's life...
OK most of you wont know this, but I just had like 6 spam msgs here that I had to delete. What the HELL.
I have always been told what Some Soldiars Mom has, but my parents picked godparents for us as kids that they also wanted to get custody of us. But I mostly thought it was more of a spiritual role, to guide them if something happend to the parents.
Congrats!
Our view of the godparents role was solely focused on the ability of someone to take over parenting duties should we drive off a bridge by mistake.
We actually upset some members of our family because we named friends as godparents; but we felt that it was the right thing to do.
Way to start a controversy, Fred. ;)
Jen
LoB or Nikki or Fred, have you guys been getting lots of spam posts recently too? I've had to delete like 10, maybe even 15, off of this thread so far.
OK I changed it so that you have to be registered with Blogger in order to be able to post (I noticed the spam msgs are always "anonymous"), so that will help, at least for a while.
I've only had one spam comment. But, I've noticed on a few Blogger sites a new feature that makes you enter those goofy wavy letters to post. I guess that's a new feature that I haven't discovered yet.
Thanks! Dontcha just love the green suit? It's sooo me.
I've only had one spam post so far Jen. I'll have to go check that now though, oddly enough I read your blog before mine. (It's that damned OCD again, Jen's Blog is in my favorites on my yahoo page and alphabetically her's comes first)
How neat to be asked to be a child's godmother. You should feel honored.
I think it's mostly just another special person who acts like a parent to the child. One who looks out for the kid and takes an active interest in their life.
And, should you be needed as a guardian for the child, temporarily or permanently, you will already be in a parental-type role having established a close bond.
