I Saw a Soldier Today.
I wrote this poem after seeing a soldier (Reserves or National Guard, I would have to guess) this weekend.
I saw a soldier today
He’d stopped to get some gas
I was hesitant to approach him
But I couldn’t let the moment pass
He was in his uniform
Standing tall and proud
I walked over to him
To say the words out loud
I worked up my courage
And looked him in the eye
“Thank you,” I said quietly
And tried my hardest not to cry
He looked a bit surprised
But I could tell my words meant a lot
“You’re welcome,” he replied with a smile
And it was the best reward I ever got
I had so much more to say
But I guess my simple thanks will have to do
Thank God there are heroes like him
Fighting for the red, white and blue

that choked me up. Thank you for writing that and doing that. The next time I see a soldiar, maybe I will get my nerve up and do the same!! kind of reminds me of the Denny's commercial, I think Denny's anyway, where the kids goes up to the firefighter and says "are you a REAL firefighter" :). Hallmark moment.
you need to start issuing mascara alerts, jen. the poem ROCKED. and thanks for doing that...you're too cool for words.

Love it! Simply beautiful. I bet you made his day.
Hey Kish, if you liked that poem, go to Sparky's blog and look at the pics she posted of the soldiers coming home.
I'm not a poet fan (a guy thing, mostly) but the thoughts expressed to those who risk their lives for our freedom is very special.
Thanks for saying thank you to our heroes.
I was out for my walk tonight and I think I saw a soldier (Jeff just thinks I'm hallucinating now). There was a group of people standing in the parking lot talking, and as I walked by, I thought I saw a guy in cammo. I kept walking, though, because I didn't have my glasses on, so for all I know, he could have been a hunter or a member of the Michigan Militia or something. And then I would have felt like a dork for going up to him and "thanking him for his service."
That was awesome! It was hard reading the end of it through all the tears!
GOOD FOR YOU, Nee. Knowing you the way I do, I know it was really hard for you to go up to them like htat. But wasn't the look on their faces worth it??
And my other soldier will be home for leave in August, too! (The one from Michigan who wants to take me out to dinner.)
