This is BULLSHIT.

Since gaining 15 lbs this year, my "project" this summer is, naturally, losing it. I bought two different workout DVDs last weekend, and I've done them every single day since then--sometimes a couple of times a day. (The Biggest Loser, which focuses on cardio, and Valerie Bertinelli, which is more toning. And they both use handweights.) I've cut out fast food and I've only been out drinking once.

Imagine my dismay, then, when I weighed myself today and discovered I'd GAINED two f*&##^#% pounds.

Now, I know what you're all going to say. You're probably gaining muscle, Jen, especially if you're using weights--and muscle weighs more than fat. Pretty soon, you'll start dropping the weight, since muscle ALSO allows you to burn off more fat.

Yeah, I know. I read the same magazine articles you do.

But I'm a GIRL, goddammit. I want to LOSE WEIGHT. I want the numbers on the scale to go DOWN. Now yes, I've seen a difference--at least I THOUGHT I did--in my body. My sides are thinner, my waist seemed to be attempting to come back (what little I had to start with, LOL), my thighs were thinner, and there was even a little less jiggle in my arms. And blah blah blah, you should judge by how you look and not the numbers on the scale.

Yeah, I know that too.

But I ALSO know that I weighed LESS when I drank every other day, lived on Wendy's, and worked out a hell of a lot less.

This is BULLSHIT.

I cAn so relate! I have been running my ass off for months and nothing! I feel better but no lbs lost. Well I list 5lbs since January but I have gained a few of that back. So I get frustrated. Even stopped snacking so much at night and I can't get anywhere. But I do feel better and that's my motivation to keep going I guess. Keep it up! I hope you see results soon.

I think a big part of it is our 30s. Seriously, metabolism takes a shit. I feel better, too. WEll, I did tell I weighed myself,LOL

I, of course, was going to make all of the arguments you already listed.

I don't give a shit what the scale says. Our weight fluctuates throughout the DAY, so it could have been just the time of day or the day of the week or, yes, because you've burned fat and gained muscle. That should be a GOOD THING!

If my clothes are feeling looser and I'm feeling better, that's hella motivation right there. And you know your heart and lungs and stuff are happy that you're exercising :-)

I'm off to the gym to start my Couch to 5K program today. I've been "meaning" to for a long time, but I'm sans child all week (WOOHOO!!!) because he's with John's parents and I told him I was going to the gym every day and would continue once he got back home. It sucks because he's at the age (9) where sitting in the child care at the gym sucks ass but I'm not quite comfortable leaving him home by himself yet...

How frustrating!

The devil on my shoulder says lol - go back to drinking, eating Wendy's & not working out.

But then the good angel shoulder says ditto Renee & all the good arguments you made yourself, Jen.

Keep on keepin' on!

FYI: Day one of Couch to 5K has possibly killed me. I will never understand why people run if they aren't being chased. Wow.

So... I woke up feeling great today. My ankles and hips hurt yesterday but this morning I was fine. Like, I could tell that I'd worked out, muscles feeling that good kind of sore. So I decided to take a 2-mile walk (the running is three times/week). MY FEET ARE JACKED. I have blisters on almost every toe. I should have taken it easier today cuz now I don't think I'll be able to run tomorrow. I may not even be able to walk tomorrow :-)

I hear ya!! I've been working out forever and in just this 1st part of this year, have gained weight. And no it's not muscle weight either. I don't know wtf the deal is. I talked to my doctor about it, but she didn't have any answers. It's frustrating and I'm actually getting to the point where I'm considering liquid diet. I weigh the most right now than I have in my entire life. It pisses me off.

Jen, I know you'll reach your goal and you'll see the results in due time. Don't get too discouraged. As the (not-so) great Rob Schneider put it, "You Can Do It". lol

Couch to 5K?? Is this something real or something you just made up? Cuz that's pretty clever. More info, please! whats your master plan, exacctly?

I ran the other night, too. It started to lightning and I was attempting to prevent electrocution. Other than that, not sure why one would do so.

Oh ok, I just found it online. Dude, THIS is the first workout??

"Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes."

um. 60 seconds of jogging is really hard right off the get go. This should be starting with, like, 20 seconds of running at a time.
