Go Jen! I wish I was walking with you in beautiful, warm, sunny Florida! I'd wish I was doing anything in FL rather than shivering here in MN ;)

Whoo! I'm up to $100 donations. and that doesn't count checks that a couple people are sending. Thanks everyone!! (I'm also going to hit up my kids this year like I did last year, but--and I don't say this in a mean way--I have a poor class this year. Seriously, all but 2 of my kids are on free and reduced lunch.)

You're gonna surpass your goal by a LOT this year!

It makes me sad how many kids are on free/reduced lunch program :-(

well remember, i have the "low" class. and unfortunately, low-scoring and low-income often go together. it seems to be 2 main reasons (because it's not "poor kids are dumb")--low-income usually has one parent, and that parent is often at work, meaning the child may not have a lot of help at home for homework. and as they were growing up, that single parent may not have been able to read to them, etc, as skills were developing. Not anyone's fault, just how it is. and b) the more "priveledged" kids can afford extra help, tutors, etc. Low-income can't.

Just random thoughts.

yeah, those are all good points. Poverty just makes me really sad.

I was on the free/reduced lunch program when I was litte, too.
I read somewhere that people with lower incomes are more generous on average, giving more money and time to charitable causes. So who knows, you might get lucky this year with the kids you ahve :)

That makes sense, Anna. Lower-income people can better relate/understand how it feels to be in need so they wnat to help. It hits closer to home, maybe.

As soon as I get a couple of these doctor bills paid off, I will definately be sponsoring you. Not sure if I'll be walking this year or not, but I'll be sponsoring, no doubt.

Are you really the only person on your school's "team"? That's fucked up.
